Although it has been tweaked and refined todays XR750 racers are very similar to the first alloy versions from 1972. Michael Bowen and his street-legal Harley-Davidson XR750. It was built by XR-750 master engine builder Mike Wheeler and raced by 20 Johnny Murphree.

The new V-twin engine was mated to a four speed gearbox in a unit construction mated to a chain final drive and installed into a special frame that was built light and handy for flat track racing. 1980 was the last year of official production of the XR750 although the factory continued to supply engines to race teams for some time after. Grand National Championship in its first year out and has since won dozens more.
